Oscar Wilde left the imprint of a great writer in his stories too. His fairy tales have a charm of their own. They captivate the young readers as well as the adults. His other stories are also marvelous. A very important writer indeed. He rightly says–”The artist is the creator of beautiful things. To reveal art and conceal the artist is art’s aim.”The present book includes some of Oscar Wilde’s finest stories. Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime is the story of an aristrocrat plotting to realize a palmist’s prediction. The palmist has read murder in his hand, and Lord Arthur makes a couple of futile efforts at the crime before he could actually get a victim. Irony plays a very intriguing part in the plot. The Young King has a moral to teach that the royal raiment, or scepter, or crown does not make a king, but sublimity and nobility do make one. The Portrait of Mr. W.H. is a tale of scholastic investigation into the Bard’s sonnets with a twist at the end. The Sphinx Without a Secret is a study in a very mysterious character. The Canterville Ghost is a different kind of ghost story. The Selfish Giant is one of Oscar Wilde’s most impressive stories. It is really quite appealing to see how a transformation is brought about for the giant, whom Wilde has treated with great compassion and delicacy. The Model Millionaire is a rather incredible story ending happily. The selection includes other charming tales like The Birthday of the Infant and The fisherman and His Soul among others.-Editor
