In 1984, no one is safe. There is no place to run, no place to hide. In this alternate-history novel by George Orwell, Big Brother is always watching. Summary of the Book What if you were being watched every moment of your life? What if the history books were constantly rewritten to suit the needs of a changing authoritarian government? What if there was no real freedom, the sort that allows us to love, learn and live? In 1984, the world has changed. The free countries of the world have warped into a dystopian version of themselves, forming a superstate called Oceania. In this world, there is no escaping the eye of Big Brother, the Party leader who is celebrated as a god. Winston Smith enjoys a normal life, in these dystopian terms at least, rewriting past newspapers articles so that recorded history always favours the current party line. Smith works efficiently despite hating his masters. He meets Julia, a young, puritanical woman who hates the regime as much as he does, and soon begin an affair. They need to hide their feelings for each other, because Big Brother controls everything, even love. In the world of Big Brother, freedom is slavery and ignorance is strength. About George Orwell Eric Arthur Blair, better known as George Orwell, was an English writer, essayist, journalist and critic best remembered for his prose, which constantly targeted social injustice, opposition to totalitarianism, and commitment to democratic socialism. Orwell contributed so greatly to the dystopian literature genre that the genre itself is called Orwellian, and his other novel, Animal Farm, is considered the epitome of satirical writing. The current title was adapted into a 1984 major motion picture, several radio programs and has inspired several songs and works of literature.
