George Orwell’s classic dystopian novel promises a world of darkness, where Big Brother is always watching. In 1984, civilization as we know it has changed, and there is only the whim of the omnipotent power known as Big Brother. Summary of the Book In 1984, the world has degraded into a totalitarian state. The omnipresent political authority called Big Brother watches everyone. No one is truly free and history is constantly rewritten in favour of the ruling party. Winston Smith works for the ruling political power governing Oceania. He is tired of the totalitarian regime, and he tries to fight against it in his own way. When he meets a young woman named Julia trying to do the same, he falls in love with her. However, there is no freedom to love while Big Brother is watching. About George Orwell Eric Arthur Blair, better known to the world as George Orwell, was an English essayist, novelist and journalist. He is mostly remembered for his novels Animal Farm, Homage to Catalonia and Down and Out in Paris and London. He is considered to have inspired much of the late twentieth century dystopian culture, in fact, his work is considered so definitive that the world Orwellian has entered the language merely to describe totalitarian or authoritarian social practices.
