365 Jataka Tales And Other Stories is a collection of undying tales which will never fail to entertain and teach children. Summary Of The Book 365 Jataka Tales and Other Stories is a large assortment of stories about the various past births of the Bodhisattva in incarnations of both, human and animal form. These biographies about the previous lives of the Buddha are a part of the canon of Buddhist literature. The exact time of the writing of these tales is difficult to pinpoint, but it is commonly believed that they were written around 200 BC. Many of the stories are translations from the Pali versions and some from cultures prevalent before the Pali works came into being. The Sanskrit and Tibetan Jatakas conform to the Pali tradition, while the stories in Persian and some other languages tend to differ due to the adjustments made to suit their individual beliefs. The book includes stories in the form of fables with animals teaching us about morality and goodness. One such story is about a monkey spreading fear among the forest animals by telling them that the sky was falling and how peace is restored by the wise lion who enlightens them about the truth. Another story is about a dead man who is reborn in the form of a goose with gold feathers and goes back to his family in order to help them make ends meet. He advises them to pluck one feather a day and spend the money wisely, but his greedy wife plucks them all at once. When the feathers grow back they are that of an ordinary goose, thus teaching the family a lesson or two. This book has stories like The Story of a Tigress, The Whatnot Tree, Prince Wicked and the Grateful Animals, A Huge Lump of Gold, The Quails and the Hunter, The Superstitious Brahmin, The King with One Grey Hair, and The Straw Worth More than Gold.
