A Broken World is a collection of memoirs of British and French soldiers of their time during the First World War. Summary of the Book It was called the “war to end all war”. The First World War was a horrible event that tarnished the face of the Earth with its bloodshed. The men and women who faced those times left them scarred, their lives torn apart by it. However, much of the scarring happened outside of the battlefield. In this anthology, the editors collect letters, memoirs and accounts of little-known people whose worlds were rankled by the war. These accounts show readers the effects war has on civilization, during and after its occurrence. Here, the voices of parents, lovers, widows and friends cry out in question, begging for answers to the scars left by war. Here, the voices of those who lived to come home to a torn family roar out in pain, questioning the meaning of victory. Here, one will discover the true fact about war: there are no victors, only losers, for war knows no sides and takes no hostages. All men and women are casualties of war, some are lucky enough to just lose their limbs, others lose everything. About the Editors Sebastian Faulks is a British writer, journalist and broadcaster known for his historical novels. Some of his books are: The Girl at the Lion d'Or, Birdsong, and Charlotte Gray. Dr. Hope Wolf is a Lecturer and Supervisor at the Girton College, University of Cambridge. She is a Rosamund Chambers Research Fellow.
