A Christmas Carol is Charles Dickens’ classic ghost story of Ebenezer Scrooge and his meetings with the three Christmas spirits. Summary of the Book Ebenezer Scrooge doesn’t like anyone. He knows that everyone is definitely after his money, and he will do anything to keep them away from it. When his partner Marley dies, Scrooge becomes even more reclusive. One Christmas, seven years after Marley’s death, Scrooge is invited to his nephew’s home for dinner. He refuses, replying that Christmas is humbug. Left to his lonesome, Scrooge receives the unlikeliest visitor of them all: his dead partner, Marley. Marley asks Scrooge to change, warning him of the price of his stubbornness. Scrooge refuses to believe in ghosts, and he is soon forced to think again. For this Christmas, Ebenezer Scrooge is going to have three more visitors. These visitors will show Scrooge the price of ignoring the Christmas spirit and that of being, well, “a Scrooge”. About Charles Dickens Charles Dickens was an English novelist, short story writer and social critic. He is best remembered for his prolific writing, and especially the novels: David Copperfield, A Christmas Carol and The Pickwick Papers. Considered the literary juggernaut of his age, Dickens constantly portrayed the poor and orphaned in his novels and stories, and touched upon the poor living situations which were rampant in those days. A Christmas Carol is largely considered Dickens’ masterpiece in short fiction, and it is regarded a classic tale of Christmas. It has several adaptations in theatre and in film. The most notable film adaptation was directed by Brian Desmond-Hurst in 1959, starring Alastair Sim as Scrooge and Michael Hordern as Marley. The most recent adaptation starred Jim Carrey and was directed by Robert Zemeckis.
