Read this story about a brave young girl, Kate Shugak. Unlike most girls, she is tough and not the kind of girl anyone would want to mess with. Summary of the Book Kate Shugak is a native of the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. She works as a private investigator in Alaska. At 5 feet 1 inch, she has a scar that runs ear to ear across her throat and a dog named Mutt that is half-wolf and half-husky. Kate is resourceful, strong-willed and defiant. All of these qualities make her tougher than the average heroine and she needs to be tough in order to survive the worst that the Alaskan wilds throw her way. It is the month of March and it is discovered that someone is selling drugs to employees of the Prudhoe Bay oil company. Kate has been hired to go undercover and find out who the dealer is. However, coke is not the only illegal substance that is being dealt. About Dana Stabenow Dana Stabenow is an American author of science fiction, mystery and thriller novels. Many of her books have been set in her home state Alaska. Dana was raised by her single mother in the Gulf of Alaska. She received her B.A. in Journalism from the University of Alaska in the year 1973. She tried her hand as an author and later decided to enroll in UAA’s MFA program. Second Star was her first novel. It was bought by Ace Science Fiction in the year 1990.
