A Comma In A Sentence is the story of India through seven generations of a modest Tamilian family. Summary of the Book R. Gopalakrishnan recounts the story of the last century in India through the story of his own family, beginning with his great-great-great grandfather, Ranganathan. A small-time landowner, Ranganathan's business changed as India changed, evolving with the social and cultural change that followed the decades after the badly mismanaged great Madras famine which Ooshi, the author’s great grandfather, used for his benefit to wean a few more rupees out of his paddy. The landscape changed further and by the time of Gopalan, the author’s grandfather, modern school education became a sought luxury, one that Gopalan struggled to provide his children. Rajam, Gopalakrishnan's father, pioneered the move to the cities and they were witness to India's movement from the modest villages to the sprawling cities that she boasts today.
