Randolph Quirk was born in the Isle of Man in 1920. He studied English at the University College London. He received an MS, a Ph.D and a D.Litt and became a lecturer at that University. He was Commonwealth Fund Harkness fellow at Yale and Michigan and later a Reader at University of Durham. He then returned to UCL as a professor and remained there until 1981. Geoffrey Leech was a Professor of Linguistics and Modern English. Geoffrey Leech was born in 1936. He is a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. He was a Professor of Linguistics and Modern English at the Lancaster University. Later, he became a Research Professor in Linguistics. He is Emeritus Professor of Linguistics at Lancaster University. Jan Svartvik is an academic and author. Jan Svartvik is a Scandinavian scholar of English language. He is Emeritus Professor at the University of Lund, Sweden. He has published several papers on English language and grammar. He is a member of prestigious institutions like The Royal Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities, and The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
