The Panchakarma is a unique feature of Ayurveda that is becoming very popular in the current era to maintain health and prevent disease. Snehana, i.e., oleation therapy, is the basic platform of Panchkarma therapy which offers its maximum therapeutic outcome. However, their rational and scientific knowledge is essential before its application. Our ancient Acharyas have critically and exclusively narrated this concept for its wide application. This paper aims to review the traditional concept of Snehana procedure in Panchakarma with both Ayurveda and contemporary perspectives.This is the literary study in which the concerned information is compiled from the Bruhattrayi, Laghutrai, Nighantu, textbooks of Panchakarma, multiple research articles from scientific databases, e.g., Pubmed, Google scholar; various P.G.& Ph.D.thesis.The collected information is expounded in a descriptive and schematic manner under different heads such as its Nirukti (Etymology), Synonyms, Importance of Arohi Snehapana, different Classification, General and specific properties of Sneha, Indications, Contra-indications, Procedure(including all pre, main and post procedures), Snehana Lakshana, complications with their management, the concept of Sadyasnehana with its specific indications & contraindications, its different formulations, mode of action of both Arohi and Sadya Snehpana based on modern and Ayurveda’s principles, the modern concept of Snehana, etc.Snehana concept in Ayurveda can be correlated with the ketogenic diet in contemporary science. The concept of Snehapana is very exclusively narrated throughout all Ayurvedic literature that needs to be practically demonstrated based on recent findings.This book definitely will helpful for Academicians , Research scholars, Ph.D. Scholars, U.G. and Post Graduate students and those who are preparing Ayurvedic Entrance exams.
