Basham Andrew Llewellyn Basham was an eminent British indologist and historian. He has also written other books like The Wonder That Was India, History and Doctrines of the Ajivikas, and The Origins and Development of Classical Hinduism. A. L. Basham was born in 1914 in Essex, England. His father served in the Indian Army and he greatly influenced his son's interest in India. A. L. Basham studied at the School of Oriental and African Studies. He graduated with a degree in Sanskrit. He later completed his doctorate at SOAS and joined the faculty of that prestigious institution. He eventually became the head of its history department. In 1965 he joined the Australian National University as its History department head. Basham has taught other renowned historians like Romila Thapar and R. S. Sharma. He passed away in the year 1986 at the age of 71.
