They keep it a secret for twenty years, but what happens when they get a call from a man who says that witnessed the criminal act? Summary Of The Book A Darker Dawn, published in 2011, revolves around four pre-teens who live in the small town of Amrapur. They are uncared for by their families, and have to face bullies and a teacher who torments them regularly. Dev is one of the four protagonists, and he always stands up against any injustice that takes place. His best friend is Avi, the class topper. A new boy named Jeet joins their class, and is threatened to be beaten up by Jagan, a class bully. When Dev rescues Jeet from Jagan, they become friends. Anita, a girl with beautiful blue eyes, also joins this group. These four children love spending time at a secret little river bank. However, at school they have to face Bokade, a teacher who hits his students with a wooden stick. This results in large bruises and scars on their bodies. One day, a communal riot breaks out in Amrapur. A curfew is announced and the children hide in Sharif Miya’s tea stall. As the massacre spreads through the city, they see how Sharif Miya is killed by his own relative. This shocks them, and they decide to run away to their secret riverbank. However, they discover that Jagan’s elder brother Bappa has found their hideout. The tension in the town and the rowdy behaviour of Bappa soon leads to a full fledged fight. The fight leads them to commit a heinous crime, and all four make a pact to keep it a secret. Twenty years after this event, these four friends now live in different locations. Dev is a Naxal leader who tries to fight for the rights of the underprivileged and Avi lives in Bangalore and runs his own business. Jeet is a painter and stays with his fiancee in London and Anita has taken up dancing. However, their past karma follows them, and they get a call from an eyewitness who had seen them commit the crime. Haunted by guilt, all four of them return to Amrapur. They soon realize that this town’s cheap politics and violent characters have increased in number in the last two decades. What will these four do to save themselves?
