He was born in a well-to-do merchant family in a small town of Skien in Norway on March 20, 1828. Ibsen wrote his first play at the age twenty-one, which was a five-act tragedy called Catiline. Like much of his early work, Catiline was written in verse. He is known as the 'Father of Realism' and is one of the founders of Modernism in theater.
