A House In The Sky is a memoir by Amanda Lindhout which retells how she was kidnapped by terrorists along with her entourage as she travelled to Somalia in the midst of an insurgency. Summary of the Book On August 23, 2008, Amanda Lindhout and Nigel Brennan were kidnapped along with their entourage in Mogadishu, Somalia, as they made their way to an IDP camp for interviews. Their abductors were teenage insurgents from the Hizbul Islam fundamentalist group, and soon began a demand for ransom. Brennan and Amanda were separated for not being married and forcibly converted to Islam. Amanda was raped several times by her abductors and her worst nightmares came to pass. After her release, 15 months later, Amanda turned to humanitarianism and began to teach others about peace and women's rights. In this book, she recounts the horrors of captivity and shows how she held onto her sanity through escaping to memories of her world travels, picturing the vivid images in the old issues of the National Geographic magazine she found while dumpster-diving as a child. An authoritative look into the kidnapping and the situation in Somalia, this book gives readers an inside view of the terrorism that is rampant in Africa. About the Authors Amanda Lindhout is a Canadian humanitarian and journalist who was kidnapped by Islamist insurgents in southern Somalia and held for 15 months with the rest of her entourage. A philanthropist, she is the executive director of the Global Enrichment Foundation and has addressed the United Nations Association in Ottawa, Canada about women's rights and has also spoken in several other notable locations about forgiveness, compassion, social responsibility and women's rights. Sara Corbett is an American journalist who works as a contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine.
