A House to Let is a small collection of short stories that are loosely strung together. It revolves around an elderly woman who moves to London. After seeing an eye peeking out from the window of a supposedly-empty house across the street, she becomes obsessed with the place. So, her long-time suitor and her servant set to work and begin competing with each other in discovering the mystery of this house. They uncover the stories of several of its former occupants, all of which are enjoyable. Gaskell's contribution, "A Manchester Marriage," is noteworthy.
