Summary Of The Book Sara Crewe is the protagonist of Hodgson’s story. She is a wealthy and socially connected little girl, who is sent to live in a boarding school during her father’s travels. Sara is loved and admired by everyone around her, especially by her father and teachers. Sara’s happy childhood comes to an abrupt halt with the news of her father’s death. With the end of her financial support, and consequently, lack of tuition funds, the students and teachers of her school begin to treat her in an ill manner. Sara is forced to stop her schooling and all her personal effects are removed. She is made to live like a pauper in a maid’s room. Miss Minchin, the headmistress of the school, forces Sara into servitude, while her former friends treat her with much cruelty. Nevertheless, Sara tries to maintain her happy spirits by acting like a little princess, which infuriates the headmistress. Slowly but surely, the gods of fate smile on Sara when she befriends a gentleman in a neighbouring house, who she eventually learns was her father’s closest friend. He had been searching for Sara since her father’s passing. When he finds Sara, he hands over a large and impressive fortune to her, left behind by her father.
