A Little Princess is a classic children’s novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Summary of the Book Sara Crewe is an intelligent young girl who is doted on by her wealthy father, Captain Crewe. She studies at Miss Minchin's Select Seminary for Young Ladies, where the Headmistress Miss Minchin hates her, envious of her wealth and cleverness. Captain Crewe buys his daughter a lavish wardrobe and leaves for India, where he means to pursue a prospective diamond business. Sara is popular in the school, and she begins to be called a princess. She takes well to her new title, and so four years pass. One day, she receives some devastating news. Her father is dead and all his wealth is rendered insolvent. Sara has nothing. Enraged that she will never be paid for all the facilities she has bestowed upon the wealthy girl, Miss Minchin banishes Sara to the attic. She is forced to teach children and run errands through snow or sleet. Soon, her resourcefulness and kind-hearted nature pave the way for her to change her destiny forever as she meets an array of people who can’t resist her charm. About Frances Hodgson Burnett Frances Hodgson Burnett was an English playwright and novelist best associated with her novels: Little Lord Fauntleroy and The Secret Garden. The above title was loosely adapted into a film in 1995, starring Liesel Matthews as Sara and Eleanor Bron as Miss Minchin. It was critically acclaimed and was nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Art Direction and Set Decoration and Best Cinematography.
