A Short History of English Literature carries the story from the Anglo-Saxon period to the last quarter of the nineteenth century with a system of inter-chapters to provide a chain of historical summary. Saintsbury's mastery of his subject, breadth of view, power of exposition, and obvious pleasure in his task, make it not merely a valuable work of reference but one of the most readable of narratives.
