John Peter Lucius Gwynn was a linguist and civil servant. Gwynn has also co-written A Grammar of Modern Telugu. John was born in London in 1916. Following in his father’s footsteps, he entered the Indian Civil Service in 1939. He retired from the ICS in 1968. He studied Classics and Comparative Philology at Dublin University. It was while he served in the Indian Civil Service in the districts of Madras and Andhra Pradesh that he fell in love with the Telugu language and its people. Many international Telugu awards were bestowed upon Gwynn for A Grammar of Modern Telugu. He passed away in 1999 in Kent.
