Emphasizing on the learning of fundamental laws, S. P. Sukhatme's A Textbook On Heat Transfer explores the elementary aspects of heat transfer in this 4th edition. The book intends to effectively pass on the science and art of the subject to the student-engineers. Summary Of The Book Heat Transfer is an offshoot of Thermal Engineering that deals with the generation, conversion, use, and exchange of heat and thermal energy between physical systems. It comprises several mechanisms like thermal convection, thermal radiation and thermal conduction. Considering the fact that these concepts are involved in many spheres of the economy, Heat Transfer is taught as a part of the curriculum in most engineering courses. This book by the veteran physicist is designed exclusively to help such engineering students in learning the fundamental dynamics of Heat Transfer. Also, the lucid writing style and elaborate explanations are intended to make this book a friendly tool for self-study as well. Across 9 chapters and numerous sub-sections, the author dissects and discusses an array of topics including the Laws of Heat Transfer, Thermal Resistance, Heat Conduction, Thermal Radiation, and Heat Exchangers. The list of principal symbols given at the beginning of the text comes in handy for easy reference. One of the significant changes in this edition is the inclusion of a separate chapter on Mass Transfer. In view of making problems and calculations more accessible, the numerical values have been replaced by appropriate equations wherever necessary. Certain sections like Thermal Radiation and Convection have been rigorously revised and reorganized to ensure that students receive the most updated information and equations. Now in its 4th edition, it is widely regarded as one of the best available books in the field. About S. P. Sukhatme S. P. Sukhatme is an Indian professor. Born in the year 1938, S. P. Sukhatme attended the Banaras Hindu University from where he graduated as a mechanical engineer. He further acquired Master of Science and Doctor of Science degrees from MIT. Sukhatme began his teaching career in 1965 as an Assistant Professor in the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. Over the years, he has been associated with the prestigious institution in various posts such as a Professor, Department Head, Deputy Director and the Director. In 2005, he was chosen the Chairman for the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board. A fellow of many renowned institutions including the Indian Academy of Sciences, Sukhatme was recognized by the Government of India for his contribution in the field of energy sciences and was awarded the Padma Shri in the year 2001. He presently lives in Mumbai, India, and is a Professor Emeritus at IIT's Mechanical Engineering department.
