T. Balasubramaniam’s A Textbook of English Phonetics for Indian Students is a comprehensive book for students of Phonetics/Phonology of various Indian universities and ELT institutes. It comprises of General Phonetics, General Phonology and the Phonology of English. Several examples are given from English, Tamil, Hindi and Urdu and Arabic, to illustrate the points made. There are many diagrams throughout the book, illustrating the articulation of the sounds of English. The book also consists of some sentences, dialogues and a popular story at the end, in Orthography as well as in simple phonemic text. The book is essential for students of Phonetics and Phonology as it conforms to the syllabus of most Indian universities and ELT institutes. About T. Balasubramanian T. Balasubramaniam is a Phonetician at the Edinburgh School. He was associated with the Phonetics staff of the CIEFL (Now EFLU), Hyderabad. He has also taught Phonetics and Phonology in Yemen and Oman. He has compiled, edited and authored many books and also monographs. He has published widely in research journals of international repute. His work on Phonetics and Phonology has been cited in their books and papers by distinguished scholars in the field like Ian Maddieson (UCLA), Peter Ladefoged (UCLA), John Laver (Edinburgh) and Eleanor Keane (Oxford).
