RATANJOT: Alkanet / Alkanna tinctoria / Ratanjot The plant is also known as orchanet, Spanish bugloss or Languedoc bugloss. It is native in the Mediterranean region. Alkanna tinctoria has a bright blue flower. The plant has a dark red root of blackish appearance externally but blue-red inside, with a whitish core. The root produces a fine red colouring material which has been used as a dye for colouring the hair burrgundy colour. It nourishes the hair and scalp. It is also used to gives different colour shades to the cosmetics like lipstick ,eye shadow. It is used for making DIY LIPSTICK AND LIP BALM.The root as a dyestuff is soluble in alcohol, ether, and the oils, but is insoluble in water. It is used to give colour to winesand alcoholic tinctures, to vegetable oils, and to varnishes Ratanjot (Hindi name) was used to add natural deep red color in North Indian dishes for years. Sadly, it is replaced by synthetic red colors now. We call it "Vembalampattai" in Tamil. It is called "Alkanet" in English. The roots of Alkanets are used as a natural red dye and it is grown widely in Europe for it. Ratan Jot is the original spice responsible for red color of Rogan Josh, and Tandoori Chicken.
