This book is written with considerable research done on water quality management, a substantial portion of it under the auspices of Resources for the Future. The present book makes use of the results of the recent theoretical and empirical research on water works engineering. The work underscores the shortcomings of conventional approaches as means of achieving economically efficient management of water quality. Continuing growth of population and economic activity makes these deficiencies increasingly serious, as the residual waste loads of everlarger conurbations put mounting pressure on watercourses.
