One who starts studying the Vedas will find it difficult to grasp the meaning of the Mahavakyas initially. Of Aham Brahmasmi, we have heard that Brahma was present even before the origin of the universe and that is the truth. Brahmavad Aham Asmi means I am like Brahma'. But this is not the meaning as per our interpretations. This Mahavakya indicates the universality of all beings. Whatever shines individually is limited. The unlimited is the universality. In the Vedanta there is universality and it is defined very well. Anything related to time and space is limited. Such as religion, caste, Guna(quality), demerits, are all limited. This unlimited description should include everything in this universe. If we give a description it becomes limited. ‘Balavan Saha’ is a noble expression. We don’t see a negative expression. That expression itself shows that he is limited to a particular quality which eliminates all other qualities, that is the restrictiveness. When we give explanations and descriptions, it means that it is limited and cannot be compared to limitlessness. As I don’t have the knowledge to explain about Brahma, the explanation of Brahma we get through the Mahavakya. Study of the Mahavakya gives us an in depth understanding of its universality. When we learn' Prajnanam Brahma' we should have a deep understanding of this Mahavakya and its universality.
