On the authority of Abu Musa al-Ash’ari, may God be pleased with him, he said: The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “The likeness of the believer who reads the Qur’an is like a citron whose smell is good and its taste is good, and the likeness of a believer who does not read the Qur’an is like a date that has no smell and its taste is sweet, and the likeness of a hypocrite who reads the Qur’an is like a basil.” Its smell is good and its taste is bitter, and the likeness of a hypocrite who does not read the Qur’an is like that of a bitter melon that has no smell and its taste is bitter.” Agreed upon
