This work contains the 20 contributions to an international symposium organized jointly by the Swiss Institute for Alternatives to Animal Testing and ETH, Zurich. Can experiments with living animals be replaced? This work offers a broad survey on alternatives. Recently developed replacement strategies are described in detail from a scientific point of view. The work should be of interest to those engaged in developing or enforcing alternatives to animal testing.
