You'll Need: Steel Tape Measure Curtain, with Rings or Loops Curtain Rod and Hardware Junior Hacksaw, If Needed Workbench or Other Suitable Cutting Surface Multipurpose Detector Pencil Long Standard Level Power Drill, With Suitable Bits and Screws and Wall Anchors, as Needed Getting Started: Choose position and length of curtain rod. Make sure curtains can be pulled back at least 2 inches from the edge of the window to allow for maximum light. Heavy fabric will take up more space. Choose the height of curtain rod above window recess (usually 2-5 inches). If necessary, cut the curtain rod to the right length with a junior hacksaw. If you're not attaching the rod to solid brick, locate studs using a detector and attach it to these, if possible. Choosewall anchors, screws, and drill bits to fit your wall. If you're concerned about hidden pipes and cables, use a detector to make sure you don't drill into anything important! What to do: 1. Mark the positions for the end bracket screws (and central, if needed) on the wall in pencil. Check that the marks are level using a long standard level. 2. Drill at pencil marks to depth of wall anchor, if using, and insert. Screw the brackets in place. 3. Thread curtain rings or loops onto the curtain rod, secure the rod to the brackets, and leave one ring or loop outside each end bracket. Secure finials to each end of the rod. How to Nail it: •If hanging heavy curtains, ensure that the screws holding up the rod are long enough to support the weight properly. •For curtain rods longer than 6 feet, or for heavy curtains, you will need a support bracket in the center as well as at the two ends. •Remember to check the length of your curtains when deciding on height to place the rod.
