The American physician turned novelist, Walker Percy, in his novels, explores the existential angst and despair experienced by modern men. He indicates the possibility of a journey from unbelief to belief, from apathy to commitment, from a secular universe to a sacred one... In Percy’s estimate, when the centre does not hold, what we are left with is a world broken, sundered, busted down the middle, and ripped from its self and man pasted back together as a mythical monster, half angel, half beast but not man. His vision is affirmative,and his novels provide modern men with a way out of their predicament.
