She completed her BA from Calcutta University and later went to the US to attend Wright State University, where she received a Master's degree. She completed her PhD in English from the University of California. She has authored several books including The Mistress of Spices, Sister of My Heart, The Conch Bearer, One Amazing Thing and We Too Sing America, among others.
