The hand cymbal, also known as manjira, is a traditional percussion instrument from India. It goes by various names such as manjeera, tala, jalra, khartal, or kartal. Manjira holds great significance in Indian folk music, particularly in the aarti ceremonies dedicated to Indian deities. In Tibetan tradition, a similar instrument known as tingsha is used, which is essentially a smaller version of the manjira. These cymbals are utilized by Tibetan Buddhist practitioners in prayers and rituals, with two cymbals being connected by a leather strap or cotton string. While manjira is typically made of metal, antique-style cymbals are crafted from special bronze alloys to produce harmonious overtones. Despite its small size, the manjira emits a delightful tinkling sound when struck together.
