The play is set in the ancient city of Calydon, where Queen Althaea and King Oeneus rule. The gods, angered by Oeneus’s neglect in honoring Artemis, send a monstrous boar to ravage the land. Atalanta, a renowned huntress, joins a band of heroes, including Meleager, the queen’s son, to slay the creature. Meleager falls deeply in love with Atalanta, a passion that drives much of the dramatic tension. When Atalanta kills the boar and Meleager awards her its prized hide, tensions erupt among the other hunters, leading to violence and betrayal.Tragedy ensues as familial bonds are torn apart. Meleager’s unyielding defense of Atalanta against his uncles leads to their deaths, invoking the wrath of Althaea. Consumed by grief and a sense of justice for her slain brothers, Althaea curses her own son, unwittingly setting into motion his doom. The play concludes with the inevitability of fate, as Meleager meets his tragic end, fulfilling the gods' will and underscoring the inexorable power of destiny.
