Granular activated charcoal is produced from coconut shell charcoal by the process of steam activation. The coconut shell charcoal is fed into the rotary kiln and activated by steam at high temperature resulting in the evaporation of impurities and opening up of pores on the surface. The resultant granular activated carbon big particles are then crushed and sieved to get the desired particle size. Activated carbon commonly used to adsorb natural organic compounds, taste and odour compounds, and synthetic organic chemicals in drinking water treatment. Adsorption is both the physical and chemical process of accumulating a substance at the interface liquid and solids phases. Activated carbon is an effective adsorbent because it is a highly porous material and provides a large surface area to which contaminants may adsorb. GAC made from organic materials with high carbon contents such as wood, lignite, and coal.
