The Dark Knight Returns is Frank Miller’s epic graphic novel about the Batman and his return from retirement to once again drive fear into the hearts of Gotham’s criminals. Summary of the Book Ten years ago, the Government forced the Batman to retire. Bruce Wayne is a bare remnant of the man he once was. He has grown a moustache. He either drinks himself senseless or recklessly drives prototype race cars almost as though with a death wish. On the tenth anniversary of the Batman’s disappearance, Wayne meets Commissioner James Gordon. Gordon faces his own retirement in a few weeks, and comments that the times have changed. Something about the meeting changes Bruce’s decision and forces him out of retirement. He takes to the rooftops and once again begins his one man war against crime. However, he may not have much time to relive his glory days for his return does not bode well with the President of the United States. The President sends his best man to convince Bruce to throw down the cape and cowl once and for all. However, is even Superman man enough to take down Batman? The Dark Knight Returns is considered to be one of the comics which changed the face of graphic novels, and is the pioneer of the gritty restructuring of superhero comics.
