The Gazetteer tells about the rise of Buddhism and Jainism, foundation of Pataliputra, the Muhammadan conquest, the Mutiny, and archaeology. It also enumerates various Muhammadan Governors. It discusses the density of population in the district, migration, dresses, houses, food, languages, religions, towns and villages, village officials, and social and political institutions. The volume states that agriculture was done on upland and lowland tracts. Principal crops grown in the region were rice, maize, Jowar, bajra, wheat, barley, oilseeds, sugarcane and poppy.
