Being highly alkaline in nature it is a good cleaning agent. It has been a traditional dishwash powder. After going through high temperatures in the burning process it is sterile. So it is safe on food utensils. It is a natural byproduct of old style home stoves, and so we don't need to manufacture it separately. A lot of pollution in the manufacture/transport of chemical detergents can be avoided. The unclean water after cleaning the utensils could be a natural fertiliser for plants since it is free from harmful chemicals. Detergents contain harmful chemicals that can harm the soil. Even if the water flows out through the drains to water bodies, unlike detergents it won't pollute the water that badly.
