Bewailing Muse: Be it the sage Valmeeki or be it the modern poet Sumitra Nandan Pant, both have held that poetry has its founts in heart and is the outcome of extreme sorrow, misery or pangs of separation. Poetry cannot be created; it gets engendered out of compulsion. From the heart! Heart’s language is poetry or musing! I have offered to christen them as Muse: ‘Bewailing Muse’; the first musings out of wailings! Nevertheless, I am tempted not to treat them as children’s literature for I sense some substantial element, too, in them. The period of the composition of these poems is from 1972 to 1976; and I feel that my wailings have not fallen on deaf ears, so to say, given my present circumstances of life which are totally opposite to the then prevailing ones!
