The tradition of using dry letters in Indian music dates back to the Vedic times. Here they are used in the form of stobhas in the samagan for the purpose of chhandpurti i.e. to make the mantras singing. In the Vedic period, the singing of mantras was not considered complete without these stobhakshars.
