Summary Of The Book Bhoole-Bisre Chitra (Hindi) is a novel that documents the gradual development of family values in India. It traces the lives of the members of a family across four generations, and depicts the disintegrating state of the joint family system. It also highlights the significant political aspects that were prevalent during the independence era, such as progress in radical thinking, dominance of feudalism, and the state of the middle class. The four generations are represented in the novel by Munshi Shivlal, Jwala Parshad, Ganga Parshad, and Naval Kishore. Munshi Shivlal shares a close association with a British collector. With the collector’s help, he manages to make his son Jwala Parshad a Naib Tahsildar. As time passes and the socio-political scenario in India changes, Jwala gets married and has a son, Ganga Parshad. Ganga is brought up luxuriously, and soon turns into a modern man, with family values and a style of living much detached from that practiced by the generations that came before him. He ends up becoming a deputy collector, and falls in love with two women, the prostitute, Malakha and Santo. But, a turn of events erodes his faith in the idealism adhered to by his grandfather, and he decides to break away from the joint family system.
