In October 1988, an Inuit hunter found three gray whales trapped in a hole in the ice in the frozen Arctic. The location of the trapped whales was near Barrow, a remote Alaskan outpost. The two older, adolescent whales were constantly working to keep an air hole open and help the young baby whale that was with them. When the program was aired, it soon got the attention of the whole country, and reporters and media crew descended on the little town. While the media frenzy was built up and local businesses tried to make the most of this unexpected influx of tourists, the plight of the whales became the focus of one person. Cindy Lowry was a Greenpeace activist and she started an all out effort to save the whales.
