Nick Adams returns home after serving in World War I, emotionally scarred and demoralised, and embarks on a camping excursion in the northern Michigan woods. He sets out on his own in the hopes that the routine of picking a nice spot to camp, erecting a tent, preparing meals, and getting ready for fishing will bring calm and equilibrium to his shattered psyche.
