About The Author: Sir George Abraham Grierson (1851-1941) was a British Indian linguist and administrator with a background in the Indian Civil Service. He developed an interest in philology and linguistics during his postings in Bengal and Bihar and published numerous studies in the journals of learned societies, as well as several books. Grierson proposed the idea of a formal linguistic survey in India at the Oriental Congress in 1886 in Vienna, where he was a delegate of the Royal Asiatic Society along with other notable scholars. He was born in Glenageary, County Dublin, to a family of printers and publishers. Grierson's later work primarily focused on linguistics, and he is best known for his contributions to the Linguistic Survey of India, which has been described as "a great Imperial museum, representing and systematically classifying the linguistic botany of India."
