Black Beauty is a classic novel by Anna Sewell and the autobiography of a horse. Summary of the Book A black colt born in an English farm begins telling his story. He begins with his life on the farm and then progresses to discuss the hardships and lessons he learnt along the way. Each chapter recounts an episode in Black Beauty’s life, and brings Sewell’s detailed observations and descriptions of the horse. The novel follows Beauty from the time of his birth to his old age in the country, and uses Sewell’s love of horses to try and educate people about horse care. The book is considered a staple part of every child’s library. About Anna Sewell Anna Sewell was an English writer, the daughter of the famous writer Mary Wright Sewell. This is her only known work. Black Beauty was adapted into a major motion picture multiple times, including a 1994 version by Caroline Thompson
