Blindness is a novel written by the Portuguese author, Jose Saramago. Summary of the Book This is the story of a baffling mass epidemic of blindness affecting almost everyone in a nameless city. It is entailed by a social breakdown. The book follows a handful of those characters that went blind in the beginning, focussing on the doctor’s wife, her husband, many of his patients, and a few selected others who all come together by chance. They survive only because of their wit. The doctor’s wife mysteriously escapes blindness. What caused this epidemic? Will the people be cured? About Jose Saramago Jose Saramago was born in Portugal in the year 1922. His literary works include plays, poetry, short stories, non-fiction and novels, all of which have been translated into more than forty languages across the world, and have established him as the most influential Portuguese writer of his generation. He was honoured with the Nobel Prize for Literature in the year 1998.
