When Leslie beats Jess as the fastest student in their class, Jess is ashamed that a girl beat him. However, they soon become friends and, eventually, the King and Queen of Terabithia, a land invented by Leslie. Summary of the Book Jess is proud that he is a fastest boy in class, but Leslie joins school and everything changes. She is faster than Jess and is very unlike the other girls. Jess soon gets over his humiliation and decides that Leslie is not such a bad person after all. He likes that she is not like other girls and that she is clever and funny. Soon, Leslie discovers Terabithia, a secret country on an island. The only way to get there is by swinging on a rope. It is a beautiful and magical place where Jess can let go of himself and forget about his troubled life with his family. In Terabithia, he was a strong boy who was scared of nothing. Jess and Leslie become the King and Queen of Terabithia and fight many giants, share stories and dreams, and plot against their enemies. However, all of this ends with a tragedy and Jess now has to deal with his grief and anger. He realizes that his family values him and that he could save the future of Terabithia.
