About The Author: Heinrich Friedrich Hackmann (1864-1935), a German Protestant theologian, religious historian, and sinologist, was born in Osnabruck, Germany. Following his studies in Leipzig and Gottingen, he began working as a private tutor in Gottingen in 1893. Hackmann served as a pastor of the German community in Shanghai from 1894 to 1904, and later became the pastor of the German Church in Denmark Hill, London, starting from 1904. He held the position of a full professor of religious history at the University of Amsterdam from 1913 until 1934.
