Written by the Chinese scholar Samuel Beal this book is a work written for people who wish to understand the origin and development of Buddhist thought in China. Divided into 25 chapters it starts with a discussion on the two major arms of the Buddhist canon; the Northern books (mainly Sanskrit works) and the Southern book (Pali works). The book explores the connection between India and China, the origin of the Sakya, legends of the Buddha, the religious and philosophical aspects, the theories of paradise, God, Soul, Nirvana, and ethics among others.
