Calvin and Hobbes is the first collection of the popular comic strips illustrated by the famous American cartoonist, Bill Watterson. The comic strip is about the two main characters, Calvin and Hobbes. Calvin is an intelligent and daring six year old boy. Hobbes, on the other hand, is a sarcastic stuffed tiger who acts a perfect companion for Calvin. The names have been kept after John Calvin, the famous 16th century French Reformation theologian, and Thomas Hobbes, the 17th century British political philosopher. The story of these comic strips has been set in contemporary United States. Calvin’s flights of fantasy and the ultimate bond with Hobbes are engagingly detailed. It also showcases the relationships of Calvin with his family and classmates. Bill Watterson started with Calvin and Hobbes when he was working with an advertising company and used to draw cartoons during his spare time. Though the author agreed to produce an animated film out of this comic strip, it did not happen. This book contains of lots of comic strips of Calvin and Hobbes and the themes covered here are of humor, family life, satire, and politics. Though Watterson has not mentioned any real-life events or political figures, these comic strips do talk about public education, environmentalism, the flaws of opinion polls, and philosophical quandaries. Bill Watterson, the famous American cartoonist, was born on 5 July, 1958. He drew his first cartoon at the age of eight and spent most of his time drawing and cartooning. He completed his graduation from Kenyon College in political science. He is known for his views on comic syndication, and for his reclusive nature. For his contribution to the field of art, he has been honored with various awards.
