This concise and thoroughly researched book was written to make able, for the first time, the history of the British rule in Ceylon. This book is well planned and has 10 sections that notice : the British occupation of Ceylon; the administrative development (1796-1832); social and economic changes (1796-1832); the Colebrooke Commission and the Reforms (1832-33); the rise of plantations (1833-1850); development of the country (1851-1872); further development (1873-90); reorganization of government and legislature (1891-1913), and, the last section is on constitutional developments (1931-1948). This book was first published in 1952
