Summary of the Book When Passepartout, a French valet, accepted a job from his new employer, the wealthy Phileas Fogg, he didn’t expect his duties to include travelling around the world. Indeed, Fogg gets involved in an argument on a statement in a newspaper. The Daily Telegraph claimed that since the railroad was opened in India, a man could travel around the world in eighty days! Fogg stands by the statement and accepts a challenge that if he were to complete such a journey, he’d be awarded a huge sum of money. Passepartout accompanies him on the journey and together they travel across the world. Their journey, and the events that follow, have proven to be one of Jules Verne’s greatest and most famous works. About Jules Verne Jules Verne was a French novelist best associated with his books Journey to the Centre of the Earth, In Search of the Castaways, The Mysterious Island and 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. One of the most famous misconceptions about this novel is that Fogg uses a hot-air balloon at some point in his journey. However, he never uses such a balloon and the image is associated with it erroneously.
