Alignment with Magnetic North: The magnetized needle of the compass responds to the Earth's magnetic field. One end of the needle, typically marked "North" (often colored red), is attracted to the Earth's magnetic south pole, which is located near the geographic North Pole. Conversely, the "South" end of the needle is attracted to the Earth's magnetic north pole, near the geographic South Pole.
